VitroPlantScan is a mobile AI tool that analyzes photos of in vitro seedlings to automatically assess viability, detect symptoms, and support technicians in monitoring genebank collections.
VitroPlantScan – AI-Powered Viability Assessment for In Vitro Plant Collections
The innovation is being developed through a collaboration between the International Potato Center (CIP) and young researchers from leading universities in Peru. The core development team includes:
- José Alva – Electronic Engineer, Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería (UNI)
- Alexis Asaturnino – Computer Scientist, Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería (UNI)
- Karen Quispe – Agronomy Student, Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina (UNALM)
CIP provides the scientific problem, technical guidance, and access to in vitro conservation workflows, while the partner universities contribute engineering, computer science, and agricultural expertise. Together, these partners are co-developing an AI-driven solution that supports the monitoring of in vitro collections at CIP and can be scaled to NARS and other institutions working with clonal RTB crops.
